3-Tips to OVERCOME writer's block

How to stay creative when you face a writer’s block while writing content?

Everybody has been a victim of the wrath of the deadly sinister aka writer’s block.

Every creative person faces writer’s block.

Be it a musician, painter, or professional practicing any other art form.

However, it won’t be totally correct to refer to it as writer’s block.

For the simplicity of understanding and not to confuse you, I’d refer to it as a creative block.

You might ask, “Devesh, I do have a rough idea of what a creative block, but mind explaining it?”

If I were to define creative block, but first brace yourself…

Rant alert!

I don’t intend to mock you, but if I don’t nip the evil in the bud, you’d never truly understand it. And mostly it’d help you retain info for longer.

Anyway, if you were to ask me what’s a creative block…

I’d often scoff at you by saying, “it’s a LAZY way to give yourself an excuse not to work.”

It isn’t because you lack any creative inspiration.

It’s because you’re a serial procrastinator.

And this procrastination either stems from your fear or skill deficiency.

Fear of being judged, fear of getting rejected, or you could face numerous other fears stopping you from reaching your true potential.

Or…

A skill deficiency can lead to a creative block.

And by skill deficiency, I’m not at all implying that you don’t have the skills.

In its true essence, I mean unfamiliarity with the topic or piece you’re working on.

Take for example, you sometimes have to write on the topic about which you don’t have any idea.

Or…

At times, I had to write for boring businesses.

But if you really wanna call yourself as a creative person…

You should embrace the fact that you’d have to write for topics you don’t like or bores you.

But I’ve the exact solution to your problem.

Research.

Research is your best ally in tackling such situations.

Get familiar with the topic. Start reading famous authors in the space who write about that topic.

Make a note of how they describe the topic and makes it more interesting to read.

If you do what I’ve described above.

Your creative juices would start flowing, and you’d find that flow state to complete your creative work.

And if you’re still facing it, I’ve got 3 other strategies to overcome the creative block.

(These are a few of my personal methods to tackle a creative block)

1. Disengage

Our creativity batteries need to be recharged before it’s used again.

Disengage yourself completely from the activity that you’re doing and take a break. Either go for a walk or engage in an activity that rejuvenates your mind.

Like I prefer going for a walk to recharge my creative batteries.

And most of my BEST ideas have come to me while I was walking.

But when you’re walking, cooking, or doing any other activity to recharge your creative batteries, make it a point not to think about work. Because it would delude the whole purpose of engaging in that activity.

2. Rubbish

Just sit down and write your heart out.

It doesn’t have to make any sense. Grab a pen and paper, or your keyboard and let your fingers move as if you’ve given a 5-year-old the leeway to write anything he wants.

Write anything that pops into your head at that moment.

No matter how wild or foolish it seems to you.

Write it down.

The purpose of this exercise is to help get your creative juices flowing.

And after 5–10 minutes, you’d observe that now your sentences have started making sense. The paragraph sounds plausible and coherent.

Boom!

You have successfully vanquished your writer’s block.

3. Smaller Chunks

If you’re working on a long form piece, try breaking it into smaller sections and working on one section at a time.

We humans get intimidated by seeing piles of work lining up.

And give ourselves an excuse; I’d get it done later.

Everybody that tomorrow never comes, the quantum space of your work keeps increasing.

So, you should try to break bigger tasks in smaller, achievable milestones.

This would not only help you stay on the track but also would help you get things done faster.

These were a few strategies I use to overcome a creative block.

Hope that’s useful!
